Grandma & Grandpa were born in the 1940s. Their history gave root to the stories I share today. A glimpse into the past, a piece of history the world would otherwise not know.
Grandma Jill told us kids stories about her meager beginnings living as the youngest of 10 children, during the Great Depression. Standing in line for a loaf of bread was similar to the toilet paper and sanitizer hoarders of COVID @ the local Wal-Mart.
Grandma survived so much in her full life. Her narrative began as Job’s & most of our births began—into trouble. She had Rhumatic fever as a baby, broke a limb or two, and almost passed from cancer. I remember mom telling us kids she looked so pale.
God, prayer & family helped her navigate through each circumstance. So happy to have known, loved & cherished her.
Don’t be fooled, she wasn’t our average, cookie-cutter Grandma, she would rant and rave, cause a ruckus if needed. Grandpa told us about the time Grandma’s physician said she would lose her hair. Well, she didn’t, (or donned a wig), and remembered what the good doctor told her at her next follow-up.
Guess what she did?
She said, “oh, I didn’t lose my hair after all,” then proceeded to maturely stick out her tongue at him. Needless to say, she was blacklisted and unable to see the doctor without Mr. Husband accomanying her!
I admired her for her strength and character. Her testimony was on fire for the Lord. Grandpa always said she’d turn on the radio right at 10:00 am, ready to listen to her gospel program.
Grandpa was a reserved, quiet, Godly man. Gruff on the outside, but sometimes his softer inside gushed out now and then. He spoke of his days volunteering & shared street-smart-stranger-danger tips (say that 5x fast), so we gauged character wisely from a young age.
I laughed so hard one time he picked us up school blaring an R&B song! I almost tinkled my pants!
